Improving "Edit Mode" in the SumUp App.

What’s the problem?

Pressing the "Edit" button within the SumUp app pulls up a bottom bar that allows users to Add a product or category. The option to add a new product is hidden behind this button. The problem that we currently have is that merchants struggle to find the way to add new products and edit existing products.

The discoverability of these features could be improved.

Why is it a problem?

Discoverability of a feature that is used frequently is important. Previous versions saw this feature within the Settings page in a place that was quite clearly visible. The redesigned version proved to be difficult to use for our merchants.

If I alter the way you add products and categories, merchants (users) will add products faster.

In order to test this hypothesis I created three prototypes and had merchants complete the following task: Add a product to your catalogue.

With this task, I was trying to test whether the proposed solutions do in fact increase discoverability of the product catalogue. The easiest way to test this quantitatively was the time it took to find the "Add Product" Button.

Testing the hypothesis

  • Control Test

    The current version, nothing changed

  • Version 1

A grey bar which appears above all products and categories

  • Version 2

Floating action bar which expands to add product or category

Test Results

I decided that it was also important to ask participants what they thought was the fastest, as perceived time can have a larger impact than the actual measured time. I asked this to see if there was a congruence between the measured time and the perceived time.

  • The mean average age was 36

  • There was a 50/50 split between Android and iOS users

  • 5/6 of the participants were female

Next Steps after Testing

Version 1 was developed and can now be found live on the iOS version of the SumUp app.

As version 2 was perceived to be the fastest, I suggested that we add this to the Android app and begin tracking session times on both platforms in order to validate and uncover which version is truly fastest.

Version 2 is currently being developed on the Android App.
